"The Walking Dead"
The Walking Dead premiered three weeks ago to the largest cable TV premiere for 2010 - 5.3 million viewers to be exact, which is the largest premiere ever for AMC - these are network numbers folks and for Halloween it is even more impressive. Walking Dead has already been renewed for a complete second season after airing two episodes, and three have aired so far. There are actually only three gloriously gory episodes left of this first season. The hour long series focuses on survivors within the world of Zombie Apocolypse. Rick, the main character, is a sherrif in a small town and is shot some time before the Zombie madness begins. He awakens in a hospital room from his coma to find his door baricaded and the hospital abandoned, a body half eaten on the floor. When he finally makes it his home he finds his wife and child have fled along with the rest of town.
The show focuses on its character development and story arc - which is where it strength lies and in a world of Zombies makes it all the more critical for credibility. Though the effects are disturbingly great, but they are not the sole focus of the series.
**Spoilers Ahead**
Most recently I myself was annoyed by Merle, a redneck survivor, who had put the scavenging group of survivors in danger while raiding the "Fallen Atanta". I rolled my eyes as the racism sub-plot but loved it when Rick summed it up with "Things are different now. There is no black and white but only dark meat and white meat ."
The third episode began with a couple of intensive minutes of Merle being cuffed to a pipe on the roof of the building with zombies referred to as "geeks" trying to break down the door and have some Merle pie. After two minutes I jumped to Merle's side after watching him wallow, cry, beg, and scream at Jesus who offered no solutions to his plight. It takes some incredible writing and acting to get viewers to jump the fence like that.
I have big hopes and dreams for the Waking Dead and I hope they get production rolling on the second season stat.
I have to share a piece of art created by animator and fan Daniel Kanemoto. This sadly blows the real opening credits out of the water. Amazing Opening Credits via (Topless Robot)
Also a zombie pic below pictured with half eaten deer for your viewing pleasure.
